Brigadier Tony Verey started his military service in Eton College CCF and then in 1968 as an Officer Cadet with A (Berkshire Yeomanry) Company, Royal Berkshire Territorials. In 1969 he transferred into the successor unit, 94 (Berkshire Yeomanry) Signal Squadron. He was commissioned in 1970 and after 6 years as a Troop Commander he became Squadron Second-in-command in 1977 and commanded the Squadron from 1980 to 1985.

He served as Second-in-command of 71 (Yeomanry) Signal Regiment from 1985 to 1988 and was promoted Commanding Officer in 1988. After command he served as TA Colonel (S) in London District from 1991 to 1993 and then became TA Colonel Royal Signals. From 1997 to 2000 he served as Brigadier TA at HQ Land Command.

From 2000 to 2010 he was Chairman of the Reserve Forces and Cadets Association for Greater London and Vice Chairman (Army) of the Council of RFCAs. He served as Colonel Commandant Royal Corps of Signals from 2000 to 2005. He was appointed Deputy Lieutenant for London in 2003.

He served as Honorary Colonel, later Squadron Colonel, of 94 (Berkshire Yeomanry) Signal Squadron from 2000 until 2015. He was Chairman of the Berkshire Yeomanry Regimental Association from 2016 to 2024 and served as Curator of the Berkshire Yeomanry Museum from 1988. He was appointed Chairman of the Museum in 2024.

Brigadier Hugh Robertson enlisted as a soldier into 94 (Berkshire Yeomanry) Signal Squadron in 1984. He was commissioned in 1988 and from 1996-2000 served elsewhere returning to command the Squadron from 2000 to 2003.

He was appointed Commanding Officer of 71 Yeomanry Signal Regiment in 2003 and was awarded the Queens Volunteer Reserves Medal for his command. Promoted Colonel in 2006 he was the first to command the newly formed Specialist Group Royal Signals. He served an operational tour in Afghanistan in 2008-2009 as Commander Joint Forces CIS. He then served as Deputy Commander 43 (Wessex) Bde and later as Assistant Director Reserves in Director Manning (Army).

He was promoted Brigadier in March 2013 and served as Assistant Commander Army Recruiting and Training until 2016. He then worked at HQ Field Army on information exploitation and projects related to Reserves and in 2021 he was appointed Head of the Reserves 2030 Report Implementation Team at the Ministry of Defence. He retired from the Army in 2023.

He was appointed Squadron Honorary Colonel in 2015 and became Vice President of the Regimental Association in 2016. He was elected Chairman of the Association in 2024.

Simon joined the Territorial Army in 1970 whilst at Oxford. He was commissioned into Royal Signals in 1973 and in 1974 he was posted to 94 (Berkshire Yeomanry) Signal Squadron.

Simon initially served at Windsor and was appointed Troop Commander in 1977. In 1979 he took over the troop location at Chertsey and led the successful expansion of 886 Troop based there. In 1984, having been promoted Captain, he was appointed Sqn Second-in-command. He commanded the Squadron from 1985-1989 and served as Second-in-command of 71st (Yeomanry )Signal Regiment from 1989-1992.

After 27 years’ service Simon retired from the Army Reserve in 1997. He continues to support the Berkshire Yeomanry as a Trustee of the Berkshire Yeomanry Museum and as Director of the Berkshire Yeomanry Regimental Association.

Major Dawn Marie Saunders joined the TA in 1994 as a Radio Operator, based in Windsor. Qualifying as a CBRN and BCDT instructor she took an active role in Squadron and Regimental training. In 2007 she was presented the Lord Lieutenants’ award for recruiting and recruit training and in 2009 was promoted to WO2 as the Regimental Recruiting Warrant Officer, aligning the Regimental Recruiting strategy across Bristol, Windsor, Reading, Eastbourne and Brighton. Leaving the Regiment 100% recruited, Dawn was posted to 4 Div (South East) Regional Training Company as CSM Selection Wing.

In October 2011 she passed the commissioning board and was posted back to 94 (Berkshire Yeomanry) Signal Squadron as the Troop Commander Recruiting and Recruit Training, implementing the new recruiting process and structure throughout the Squadron. Dawn moved into the Sqn Ops Officer role and in 2013 transferred to 39 Signal Regiment RHQ as the Regimental Ops Officer.  In 2014 Dawn returned as the Squadron Second-In-Command and in October 2018 served as the first female Officer Commanding until July 2021. Dawn served as a staff officer at Army Headquarters in Andover, responsible for Reserve Training Policy and received the Kings Volunteer Reserve Medial in 2024.

Dawn is currently serving in the Royal SIgnals HQ, Blandford.

Barry Hearn joined 94(Berkshire Yeomanry) Signal Squadron in 1976 at Windsor where he qualified in two trades initially as a Combat Powerman and then as a Radio Operator. Initially he served with 886 Signal Troop at Windsor and in 1978 he transferred on its formation to C2 Troop, which was equipped solely with D11/R234 radios, In due course he was also appointed the Power Instructor on regimental trade weekends. Barry was a keen supporter of the Regimental Shooting Team for many years and was a vital part of their administration.

Promoted to Sergeant in 1980, Barry was posted as Troop Sergeant to 886 Signal Troop in Chertsey. After a successful period at Chertsey he transferred back to Windsor and was appointed Squadron MT Sergeant. He then served as SQMS Clothing until 1992 when he transferred to the Adjutant General’s Corp and was appointed Squadron Clerk.

In all he completed 40 years of service until his retirement in 2016.

Jules Carmichael was commissioned at Sandhurst as an infantry officer in 1988 before transferring in 1996 to the Royal Yeomanry as Second-in-command of a Reconnaissance Squadron. Promoted Major, he spent two years commanding a Special Communications Squadron before deploying on operational tours in Sierra Leone and Kosovo. In 2002 he commanded the Recruit Selection Centre at Pirbright.

Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in 2004, he was posted to MOD Whitehall and in 2005 to the Army Officer Selection Board as Vice President. In 2008 he was the Defence Attaché, British Embassy in Kosovo. In 2010 he was seconded to the Department of Energy and Climate Change on Op ESCALIN and during Op OLYMPICS he commanded a team of officers at the London Operations Centre. He served as a staff officer at Northwood from 2012 to 2014 and then deployed on a ten-month tour commanding the Somalia National Army Support Team in Mogadishu. This was followed by a year as Defence Attaché in the British Embassy in Turkey covering operations in Iraq and Syria and the attempted coup in Turkey. He has most recently been instrumental in the army’s Change Management programme EMPOWERMENT.

In 2006 he was elected to the Executive Committee of the Berkshire Yeomanry Regimental Association.

Padre John Scott joined the East Surrey Regiment Army Cadets in 1962. Graduating from Kings College London in 1968, he was ordained and served in several parishes until appointed Chaplain to four hospitals in Somerset. He also joined the Royal Army Chaplains Department as a reservist.

In 1982 he transferred to the Royal Corps of Transport, where he gained his HGV qualifications, and from 1983 to 1986 he served with 219 Field Hospital. Moving to become Chaplain at Pangbourne Naval College, he was commissioned into the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve.

In 1990 he transferred to 71 (Yeomanry) Signal Regiment as Regimental Padre. In 1994 he was promoted Major and was a senior HGV instructor for the regiment.

In 2004 the he retired from the Reserves and was appointed Honorary Chaplain to the Berkshire Yeomanry Regimental Association. He regularly leads the annual service on Remembrance Sunday and has officiated at many other memorial events including the dedication of the Potts VC Memorial in 2015.

Wayne served in the Army Cadets from 1975 until 1979 when he joined the Regular Army, training as a Technician in Royal Signals. He completed Commando Training and served in Northern Island, the Falkland Islands and Europe. He left the Army as a Sergeant after 12 years and started a career as a telecommunications network planner.

He joined 94 (Berkshire Yeomanry) Signal Squadron in 1996 and served in the Squadron for 16 years, becoming the Squadron Foreman of Signals, until his retirement in 2014 as Support Troop Commander. On retirement he was elected to the Association Executive Committee and was appointed a Museum Trustee. He enjoys studying regimental history.

In 2019 he was appointed to a two-year full time role as 94 (Berkshire Yeomanry) Signal Squadron’s recruiting officer and was instrumental in fostering a major increase in the enlistment of new recruits. He continues to serve in a similar role elsewhere.

Lord Christopher Glanusk joined the London Rifle Brigade (Rangers) from his School Cadet Force. He then served with Cambridge University OTC for three years and, in 1964, he was commissioned into the 7th Bn the Cheshire Regiment. Following the Territorial Army reforms of 1967, having moved to the south of England, he served in the Royal Berkshire Territorials and in 1969 he transferred to 94 (Berkshire Yeomanry) Signal Squadron on its formation and served as Troop Commander of 886 Signal Troop, then based in Southampton, and then of 885 Signal Troop at Windsor.

Returning north in 1976 he joined 80 (Cheshire Yeomanry) Signal Squadron as Radio Relay Troop Commander responsible for links to SACEUR’s Mobile HQ. Promoted Major he transferred to HQ 2 Signal Brigade as SO2 Watchkeeping and Radio Relay Planning.

Moving south in 1980, he retired from the Reserves but renewed his contacts with the Berkshire Yeomanry, serving as Chairman of the Berkshire Yeomanry Regimental Association from 2006 to 2016 and as Chairman of the Museum from 2016 to 2024.

Andrew French joined 94 (Berkshire Yeomanry) Signal Squadron at Windsor in 1978 and trained as a Combat Radio Operator. Initially he served in Squadron Headquarters as part of the detachment that manned the Squadron Command Post and by 1984 he had risen to become the SHQ Troop Sergeant. In 1987 on promotion to Staff Sergeant he was posted to 886 Troop at Chertsey. Alongside this he was a drill and weapons training instructor with the Squadron and Regimental Military Training Team. He was appointed Squadron Sergeant Major in 1991. Andrew was a keen shot and served for many years as a member of the 71st (Yeomanry) Sig Regt Shooting Team.

He was commissioned in 1997 into the RLC before transferring two years later back to Royal Signals. His last posting was as a Captain at HQ 145 Brigade at Aldershot. He retired from the Army Reserve in 2005.

Andrew’s interest in the history of the Berkshire Yeomanry began almost immediately and he has spent much of his spare time on researching and recording the lives of those who served in the regiment. His extensive knowledge has been of great assistance to many families seeking to trace their ancestors’ exploits. He was appointed Assistant Curator in 1988 and became Curator in 2024.

Brigadier Vince Connelly joined the Territorial Army in 1986 and was commissioned in 1988. He initially served with the Royal Engineers and worked his way through Field, Air Support, Plant and Support Squadron roles, including a year working with the New Zealand Army. He transferred to Royal Signals in 2002 and, after a posting at Oxford UOTC, commanded 94 (Berkshire Yeomanry) Signal Squadron from 2006 to 2009.

He undertook various staff appointments in HQ Army, Home Command and Regional Command before assuming command of 39 Signal Regiment (The Skinners) from 2017 to 2020, overseeing the regiment’s change of role from UK Operations to a Radio Regiment for HQ ARRC deployments. He was promoted Colonel in 2020 and, reporting to Commander Field Army, led the Field Army Empowerment and Continuous Improvement Programme. He was an inaugural member of the Reserves Think Tank providing advice and research on Reserve issues for HQ Army and the Reserve Forces 2030 Programme.

He was appointed a trustee of the Berkshire Yeomanry Museum in 2010 and was elected Deputy Chairman of the Berkshire Yeomanry Regimental Association in 2024.

Stuart Sampson joined 94(Berkshire Yeomanry) Signal Squadron in 1976 at Windsor where he qualified as a Radio Operator. He served with 885 Signal Troop at Windsor and in 1977 he was selected to take part in the route-lining for the Silver Jubilee celebrations in London.

He was commissioned in 1980 and served as Troop Commander of SHQ Troop, then of Anchor Troop and then of 885 Signal Troop. He commanded the Squadron from 1993 to 1995 during which time he led the Squadron at the 1994 Review of the Yeomanry in Windsor Great Park and was instrumental in the granting to the Squadron of the Freedom of the Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead in 1994.

He then served as Second-in-Command of 71st (Yeomanry) Signal Regiment from 1995 to 1997.

He was appointed a Museum trustee in 1992 and since 2008 he has been one of the Honorary Stewards of Westminster Abbey. As well as regular duties on Sundays this includes Special Services such as the Royal Wedding in 2021.

James Macnamara was commissioned in 1977 whilst at Oxford University OTC and, on graduating, served with the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards in Germany and then with 2nd Royal Tank Regiment in Ulster. He then served as a troop leader with the Berkshire & Westminster Dragoons Squadron of the Royal Yeomanry and then was appointed Second-in-Command of the Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry and then Officer Commanding the Kent & Sharpshooters Yeomanry and, subsequently, Officer Commanding the Westminster Dragoons.

In 1995 he was tasked to raise and command D (Berkshire Yeomanry) Squadron in Slough, initially a light cavalry unit and later an NBC decontamination unit, before serving on London District staff and, finally, as Band President of the Inns of Court & City Yeomanry.

He was appointed a trustee of the Berkshire Yeomanry Museum in 1996 and is a trustee of a number of other military charities, including the Royal Armoured Corps Memorial Trust, Defence Medical Welfare Services, Queen Mary’s Roehampton Trust and the Westminster Dragoons Benevolent Fund.

She was commissioned in 2011 and rejoined 94 (Berkshire Yeomanry) Signal Squadron as Troop Commander. In 2013 she was appointed Regimental Ops Officer and then in 2014 she became Squadron Second-in-command. She commanded the Squadron from 2018 to 2021, the first female to do so.

In 2021 she served at Army Headquarters with responsibility for Reserve Training Policy and is currently serving at Royal Signal Headquarters, Blandford. She was granted the King’s Voluntary Reserve Medal in 2024.

In 2021 she was elected as Secretary of the Berkshire Yeomanry Regimental Association. She also serves as Secretary of the Berkshire Yeomanry Officers Dinner Club and Secretary of the Hungerford Star Club.

Aged 18, Chris joined his local Territorial Army unit, 886 Signal Troop of the Berkshire Yeomanry, at Chertsey in 1983 whilst at college. Qualifying as a Radio Operator and as a Combat Powerman he served as a Radio Detachment Commander and as a regimental instructor. He also served as a Troop Storeman and in 1992 he moved to Squadron Headquarters at Windsor eventually becoming SQMS (Clothing). After 22 years’ service he retired in 2005.

Chris was a keen shot and served for many years as a member of the Regimental Shooting Team. He continues to support the Berkshire Yeomanry Museum specialising in firearms and minor acquisitions. He is currently a civil servant in stores support for a military unit in Aldershot.

Captain Alan King was commissioned into Royal Signals in 1977 whilst at Sheffield University OTC. On graduating he served with 93 (East Lancashire) Signal Squadron as Troop Commander in Blackburn and Manchester.

In 1984 he transferred into 94 (Berkshire Yeomanry) Signal Squadron and served as Troop Commander of 886 Signal Troop, then based in Chertsey. In 1987 he became Squadron Ops Officer at SHQ in Windsor. He transferred to RARO in 1988 and subsequently retired from the Territorial Army.

He continues to support the Berkshire Yeomanry, previously as IT Director and currently as Accreditation Manager of the Berkshire Yeomanry Museum.
